Videos: Mod 9

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

1.) I selected the video about Albrect Durer because he was an artist we had recently discussed in my Drawing class and I was interested in learning more about him. I chose the video about Velazquez because his portraits fascinate me and I wanted to learn more about his life as an artist.
2.) -Albrect Durer: -a German painter and printmaker. He had a reputation in the arts community at a young age because of his high quality wood prints. Durer was amongst the first landscape artists in Europe. His landscapes beautifully play with natural lighting captured with watercolor and gouche,

-Velazquez: -an educated painter, who had an immense library full of endless amounts of literature and studies. His art captured the moment, and his works were timeless. Velazquez played skillfully with lights and shadows in his paintings. He often worked on his paintings slowly and skillfully, over his lifetime.
3.) The videos both relate to the reading in the text by giving us and extended background knowledge on the artists from the book. Understanding more of both artist's history can help us analyze their works of art.
4.)I enjoyed both of the films and the way they went through the history of each artist. These video allow us to develop a greater understanding of the artist's ideals and how their life experiences reflect in their paintings.

Mod 9: Hand Study

1.) Using my hand as a subject matter was not unusual for me. When drawing hands I usually use mine as a reference so I can get the proportions correct.
2.) I selected charcoal because I like how easy it is to create contrast while drawing with it. Personally, I like drawing in charcoal over pencil because I like the intensity you can create in an image.
3.) It felt extremely uncomfortable using my non-dominant hand to draw. I wasn't confident in my drawing ability using my non-dominant hand.
4.) I think they are successful studies because I was able to see the difference in using my non-dominant and dominant hand to draw. It also helped me to understand the proportions when drawing human hands.
5.) I don't think I would consider using my non-dominant hand to create art in the future. It felt awfully strange and just not comfortable drawing with my left hand. I feel like it would be something I would have to grow use too. I also don't think I would have the same level of skill or technique using my non-dominant hand.

MODULE 8

1. Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

1.) I chose the video because "The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and Human Figure" because Greek history has always been a favorite topic of mine. Greek art is especially fascinating to me when in ties into mythology and other folklore.

2.) For the video "More Human Than Human" I learned more information of the "Venus of Willendorf". Which was an important discovery by a group of archeologists in 1908. We see an over eexaggerated form, that embodies a female figure. In the video, "The Measure of All Things: Greek and Human Figure" I learned that Greeks were fascinated by the human body and recreating it in their art. They strove for perfect proportions in their works of art, whether it in drawing or sculpture.

3.) The videos relate to the text by providing a more in depth analysis on the topics we covered in the readings. The "More Human Than Human" video, gives us more history on the human figure in the art world than the book. In the second video I chose, we study more about the Greeks obsession with the human body, and how they strove to recreate it in a perfect form.

4.) In my opinion, both films were very informative in relation to our readings in the text. It's very helpful watching the videos that relate to our chapter readings. It helps us understand more as an artist knowing the history of key topics. Figure drawing is something that has always been a struggle for me, so studying more about human form in art was interesting to me.

Module 7

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?

4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?
1.) "Frank Gehry's: Architecture as an Art
  • Buildings go further than being designed just solely for function. Buildings should be designed as a form of art
  • Buildings are similar to sculpture
  • Gehry's design process starts with a sketch of the building and he then makes a model before the actual building process
    "Architecture: The Science of Design"
  • Concrete is a major building material in creating architecture that scientists are constantly working on to make stronger
  • Architects must take into account environmental factors when creating the building's design. Especially when designing skyscrapers, factors like wind and snow accumulation must be considered.
  • Architecture and technology work together ins "smart homes". Computers control things in the home such as lighting and sound.
2.) The videos tied into the reading because we learned more about structural systems and the design process of creating a building. The readings touched upon Gehry's design process while, the video gave us a more in depth analysis.

3.) I found both films very informative and gave more detail into the construction of a building. I love having more visuals when learning about a new topic. Being able to really see the step process of building gorgeous structures helps my understanding.

4.) I chose the video "Architecture: The Science of Design" because I wanted to understand more about the steps and process that goes into a building. I chose the video "Frank Gehry's: Architecture as an Art" because I was interested in learning more about Frank Gehry and his artistic process as an architect. I really liked how he believed buildings served both structural and artistic purposes.

Mod 6: Peer Blog Review

1. Hyperlink the Blogs you reviewed into your Blog

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?

3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?

5. What do you think about  the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?

6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?
2.) After looking at Project #1 for both of my peers, I did agree with the photos they chose in relation to the principle or element of art along with it. More than one principle or element of art was apparent in the photos uploaded. For example in Let There Be Art's photo for movement, I also feel there was a strong contrast between the white smoke cloud dark background. Also the us of value in the greyscale of the photo.
3.) The images I chose for Project #2 we're not the same as the ones my peers reviewed. This allowed me to explore pieces I may have overlooked. Seeing art pieces that others felt a connection too gave me an appreciation for pieces I may haven't had an interest in.
4.) In Kaitlynn's Blog I was interested in finding out more about the painting "Nomad", and the artist's creative process. In her blog, I was also felt the connection of the organized chaos in Peter Ford's painting, "No.22". Being a working college student I also understand that feeling of trying to keep everything together even a busy time.
5.) I definitely find it valuable to have an understanding of my peer's opinions and viewpoints. It gives me better insight on topics, allowing me to understand some things about art from a different perspective. Also, I think as an artist being aware of your audience is very important.
6.) I do find the comments of my peers helpful. I feel as a whole we are able to give good insight and constructive criticism, which helps us grow as artists.

MOD 6

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

1.) In the video "Through the Eye's of the Sculptor", we followed master scultpter Emmanuel Fillion create a new marble sculpture. It was very interesting having a visual to follow for the steps of creating a sculpture, from start to finish. I found Emmanuel very informative as an artist and enjoyed a lot of his insight. I really loved how he described sculpture as coming alive in the clay, dying in plaster and reborn in marble. What also stuck with me is when he talked about the piece becoming alive when he can visualize and sketch the image in his head. I also learned in restoration sculpting that sculptors rarely work on the whole piece, but are assigned a section of the sculpture.
In the "Glass and Ceramics" video, I learned that ceramics are made from clay, while glass is made from sand. I was very intrigued about the process of creating a stained glass piece. I have always found stained glass art in churches and other buildings very beautiful. The artist must really observe and take note of how the light affects the room of the stained glass window. The artist then makes a small scale size of the stained glass piece that is about 1/10th of the size. I found it interesting that they made the small piece first before then sketching a full size drawing of the window.

2.) Both videos help to further reiterate the steps in creating scultpures, glass and ceramics in the text. As a visual learner, being able to watch the step by step process of creating such pieces helped me have a better understanding. These artists must demonstrate patience and a certain level of technicality when creating.

3.) I really enjoyed both films, but I definitely feel like I got more out of the video,"Through the Eyes of a Sculptor". Watching a master sculpter, like Emmanuel work, and his techniques really helped me to better understand the process of creating a scultpture. The videos allowed for a deeper understanding of how sculpture, installation and craft are all related in some way. I feel like a certain level of craft is required while creating anything, especially a sculpture or installation. Sculpture could definitely be a part of an installation, they are both structural creations.
